Laura Jade is an emerging artist currently living in Lane Cove, Sydney. Laura completed her BFA at the National Art School, Sydney in 2007. Her current works are explorations of portraiture, playing with the idea of persona, depiction, characterization, performing and play-acting. Also inspired by the portrait techniques and aesthetics of 18th century Victorian era, Laura is working to re-enliven those themes in modern times, projecting herself and friends as characters of a fictitious aristocracy.
In January this year cartoonist Samuel James had a life changing experience at the Library of Queensland. An Exhibition of the Best Australian Political Cartoons of 2009 revealed an ambition that had never been recognized. Since that moment SJ has done a cartoon every day, uploading to his website. These cartoons, naïve and childish in appearance, are simplifications of current affairs in the media. In this exhibit "Portrayal" are the 10 best and most provoking works SJ has done so far. These words written by Michael Leunig describe what is at the core of SJ's charge.
"The true cartoonist is a moral philosopher who compulsively and dutifully challenges and resists the powerful, the victorious, the dominant, the fashionable, the well-heeled, the well-established and the well-armed; and in so doing, upholds the importance of the powerless, the vulnerable, the voiceless outsiders, of nature and many improbable or neglected ideas."
