Ariel is an experienced classical guitarist with a passion for music education. He completed his Bachelor of Music with first class honours at the Australian National University, studying under the guidance of Australia’s preeminent guitarist and pedagogue Timothy Kain.
Since graduating in 2011, he has collaborated with some of Australia’s leading musicians and has been invited to perform in concerts and music festivals across Australia and abroad including the Canberra International Music Festival, Newcastle Music Festival, and the Glebe Music Festival. He has also made several live radio performances. Ariel’s album of guitar duets entitled Alchemy was released on ABC Classic and reached number two on the ARIA classical music charts, and was recently nominated for an AIR award in the category of Best Independent Classical Album in 2021.
For over ten years, Ariel has given individual, group and ensemble lessons at his home-studio and in a number of schools in Sydney and Canberra including Canberra Grammar, Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich, Sacred Heart Mosman, Music for Everyone, and Newtown North Public School. He has extensive experience preparing students for AMEB exams and HSC music courses, and though he specialises in classical guitar, he feels at ease teaching in a range of styles.
At the core of Ariel’s teaching philosophy is the idea that the aural end-goal ought to inform every aspect of the student’s instrumental development. Regardless of the student’s level, they should be taught to play with a sense of rhythm, metre, and phrasing, and all the things that make for an expressive performance such as variety of dynamics, articulation, tone, and, with respect to more substantial pieces, an overall clear and considered interpretation.
Ariel is responsive to the ways that different individuals learn, encourages them to explore their unique musical interests, and is keen on helping each student reach their potential.
